How to Price Your Freelance Work as a Student (Without Underselling Yourself)

Pricing is where most student freelancers get stuck — charge too much and you lose the client before you start; charge too little and you’re working for less than minimum wage while building someone else’s business. Here’s a more useful way to think about it.

Stop pricing by the hour when you’re starting out

Hourly pricing punishes you for getting faster. If it takes you 3 hours to build a logo today but only 1 hour once you’ve done it fifty times, hourly pricing means you earn less as you improve — which is backwards. Project-based pricing (a flat fee for “a logo,””a resume,””a landing page”) rewards skill and speed instead of punishing it.

Research what similar work actually sells for

Before setting a price, look at what 3–5 people offering similar services are charging — on Fiverr, in local freelance groups, or from friends already freelancing. You’re not copying their price, you’re finding the realistic range so your number isn’t a random guess.

Price slightly below market when you have zero reviews

This isn’t about undervaluing yourself forever — it’s a temporary strategy. A slightly lower price when you have no portfolio or reviews removes one of the client’s biggest hesitations (risk), in exchange for you getting the project, the testimonial, and the experience. Once you have 3–5 solid reviews, raise your prices — most new freelancers wait far too long to do this.

Separate “scope” from “price” in your head

The actual mistake usually isn’t the price — it’s not defining what’s included. “₹800 for a resume” with no limit on revisions can turn into ten rounds of edits for the same ₹800. Define upfront: “₹800 includes 2 rounds of revisions; additional rounds are ₹100 each.” This protects your time without needing to raise your headline price.

Don’t compete purely on being the cheapest

There’s always someone willing to charge less — that’s not a race worth trying to win as a student with limited time. Compete on reliability, communication, and turnaround instead: replying quickly, delivering on time, and doing exactly what was promised. Clients pay a premium for not having to worry.
