Resume Mistakes That Are Costing You Interview Calls

If you’re applying widely and hearing nothing back, the issue is often one of a handful of fixable resume mistakes — not your actual qualifications. Here are the five most common ones.

1. A generic, one-size-fits-all resume

Sending the exact same resume to every job posting is the single biggest reason strong candidates get filtered out early. A resume tailored to mention the specific skills and requirements from a job description — assuming you genuinely have them — performs dramatically better than a generic version, both with ATS software and with human reviewers.

2. Listing responsibilities instead of results

“Responsible for managing social media accounts” describes a duty. “Grew Instagram following from 200 to 2,000 through a consistent content schedule” describes an outcome. Wherever you can, rewrite duty-based bullet points into result-based ones — even small, honest numbers make a real difference.

3. A summary that says nothing specific

“Hardworking and motivated individual seeking opportunities to grow” could describe literally anyone. A summary should say what you actually do and what you’re specifically looking for — “B.Com student with hands-on freelance web design experience, seeking a frontend internship” tells a recruiter something real in five seconds.

4. Inconsistent or unclear formatting

Different date formats, inconsistent bullet styles, or unclear section breaks make a resume harder to scan — and recruiters typically spend under 10 seconds on a first pass. If the formatting slows them down, they move on, regardless of what’s actually in the content.

5. Typos and small errors

This one is almost embarrassingly simple, but it’s still one of the most common reasons a resume gets discarded. A single typo can read as a lack of attention to detail — which, fairly or not, is exactly the trait many roles are screening for. Always read your resume aloud, or have someone else read it, before sending it anywhere.

The fix isn’t always a rewrite

Often, it’s the same content, restructured — specific instead of generic, results instead of duties, consistent instead of scattered. If you’d like AI help tightening up your existing bullet points and summary without starting from scratch, StudentPro’s Resume Builder has an “Improve with AI” option built in for exactly this.
